Portland turned a Cascadia night on its head at Providence Park, coming from behind to beat Seattle 2–1 and claim three points that reshape the top of the table race in Matchday 18. The Timbers were second-best for long stretches of the first half and much of the third quarter, but two moments of quality — one from Kevin Kelsy on the stroke of a Seattle onslaught, another from an unlikely source late — flipped the ledger.

Seattle struck first, and through a face that only appeared by accident. Kalani Kossa-Rienzi had entered in the seventh minute as an injury replacement for Paul Arriola, and by the 27th he had punched through with a left-footed strike from outside the box that curled into the bottom corner. The Sounders should have had more before the interval: Albert Rusnák, Snyder Brunell and Nouhou Tolo all had efforts blocked or saved during a five-minute siege around the half-hour, and James Pantemis had to be alert to deny Tolo's header. Against that run of play, Portland leveled in the 41st when Kristoffer Velde whipped in a cross from the left and Kelsy converted from close range. The Venezuelan picked up a booking in stoppage time to add to Kamal Miller's earlier yellow.

The pattern held after the restart — Seattle probing, Portland countering — but the Timbers gradually took the initiative through David Pereira da Costa, whose three key passes and constant involvement between the lines dragged the visitors out of shape. Andrew Thomas denied Velde twice and pushed away a da Costa effort from distance, before the breakthrough finally came in the 82nd. Da Costa slid the ball to Brandon Bye, and the right back drove a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom-left corner. It was the defender's afternoon: a match-high 8.3 rating, six duels won from eight, and the decisive goal.

Seattle pushed late through Jesús Ferreira and substitute Danny Musovski but couldn't test Pantemis again with any conviction. The underlying numbers — 1.71 xG to 1.22, and a 14–16 shot count that flatters the visitors given how many were blocked — capture a game Portland deserved to nick. For the Timbers, it is a signature Cascadia result. For Seattle, whose finishing again lagged behind their volume, questions remain about converting territory into goals.
